Introduction

Introduction

India and other markets have been unable to replicate a popular fabric used in activewear garments. This fabric is known for its moisture-wicking, breathable, and stretchy properties, which make it ideal for activewear. However, the exact manufacturing process for this fabric is a trade secret, and it has not been possible to replicate it outside of the original manufacturer.

The challenge is to develop a fabric that is similar or better than the imported fabric, and that can be produced locally. This would allow India and other markets to produce activewear garments that are just as good as those made with imported fabric, but at a lower cost. It would also reduce the country's reliance on imported materials.

Our Approach

Our Approach

To study the overall production cycle of the brand bring in design interventions in this cycle.

Fashion industry holds the second place among the pollution causing industry. Our aim is to reduce the solid waste which is produced during garment production. Every year lot of waste are dumped to landfills.

We aim to recycle all the pre consumers waste generated during the manufacturing and make it go back to into the same system by up-cycling it.

Direction 1

Direction 1

Tech fabric is manufactured in China and imported to other countries. This fabric is in high demand because of its exceptional properties.

One of the clients of tech fabric is Bearbottom. A company that manufactures activewear garments. They use tech fabric in their garments because it allows for better performance and comfort.

We do not have information about how tech fabric is manufactured.

What we understood from the Tech Fabric-

Dry Quickly
Crease resistant
Breathable
Strong
Flexible
Lightweight
Single weft machine
Flat knitting

We looked into different manufacturers in China.

We found one manufacturer in Delhi, India who have fabric similar to Tech fabric. They have variety of fabrics in composition of Polyester and Spandex.

Garment Manufacturing

Garment Manufacturing

-We aim to upcycle all the garment waste generated during the manufacturing process and stream it back into the system.

-We can collect the fabrics from the manufacturing unit.

-We will stitch all the waste fabric together and make one final cloth. Sew the top edge of the fabrics together, adding elastic into the seam as you go. One last seam and you will be finished. With the fabric wrong side out, fold the right sides together along and pin the side seam together.

-Tie off the thread tails and trim

Garment Production

Garment Production

  • Receiving fabric: The first step in garment production is to receive the fabric. The fabric is typically received in rolls, and it is inspected to make sure that it is the correct quantity and quality.

  • Fabric relaxing: Once the fabric has been inspected, it is relaxed. This is done by allowing the fabric to rest for a period of time. This helps to ensure that the fabric will not shrink or distort when it is cut and sewn.

  • Spreading the fabric: The next step is to spread the fabric. This is done by laying the fabric out on a table or cutting table. The fabric is spread out so that it is smooth and even.
Laying down each fabric in bundle: The fabric is then laid down in bundles. This is done to make it easier to cut the fabric. The bundles are typically laid out in a specific order, such as by size or color.

  • Marking down the pattern for cutting: The next step is to mark down the pattern for cutting. This is done by using a chalk or marker to trace the pattern onto the fabric. The pattern is typically traced onto the fabric in several places to make sure that it is accurate.

  • Cutting: The fabric is then cut according to the pattern. This is done using a cutting machine. The cutting machine ensures that the fabric is cut accurately and evenly.

  • Sewing: The next step is to sew the garment. This is done using a sewing machine. The sewing machine stitches the fabric together to create the garment.
Checking: The garment is then checked to make sure that it is sewn correctly. This is done by inspecting the garment for any defects.

  • Packaging: The garment is then packaged for shipping. The garment is typically packaged in a box or bag. The packaging protects the garment from damage during shipping.

Zero Waste Design Approach

Zero Waste Design Approach

To recycle all the pre consumer waste we aim to use a traditional stitching method. In this method, garment pattern blocks are combined so that they form the basic shape of the garment and all piece are not cutted separatel.

We aim to create a multipurpose neck gaiters through pre consumer waste.
